Television has been around commercially since the 1930s and the development of TV standards has always been fragmented. In 1990, a major milestone was achieved in the standardisation of HDTV through the ITU-R Rec BT.709. This recommendation represented the first single worldwide TV standard. Last year, ITU duplicated this feat by standardising the next generation of HDTV, known as Ultra-HDTV (UHDTV), via ITU-R Rec BT.2020.

May 2012 WRC-12: Use of 21.4-22GHz band & ENG harmonisation get the nod
The World Radiocommunication Conference 2012 (WRC-12) held in Geneva, Switzerland, from January 13 – February 17 successfully addressed more than 30 agenda items on regulatory and technical matters relating to all types of radiocommunication services. Among the agenda items relevant to broadcasting were the use of the 21.4-22GHz band as well as its associated feeder link bands for broadcast satellite service (BSS) in ITU Region 1 (Africa, Europe, Russia) and Region 3 (Asia), and the harmonisation of spectrum for electronic newsgathering (ENG).
April 2012 Asia staking its own key DTH hotslot
Fuelled by rapid economic growth, and supported by market deregulation, the Asian direct-to-home (DTH) pay-TV sector has enjoyed remarkable growth in recent years. Over the past five years, the DTH customer base in the region has grown by 300% from 12 million subscribers in 2006 to 49 million in 2011. In India alone, there are now six DTH operators with an estimated 30 million subscribers.

Dr. Ali R. Ebadi is the Senior Vice President – Space Systems D Development of MEASAT Satellite Systems Sdn. Bhd and was a member of the Radio Regulations Board (RRB) of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) from 2006 to 2014 (8 year maximum tenure). He has more than 30 years’ experience in the field of Radio Engineering, Spectrum Management and Satellite Communications and was a prominent voice in ITU’s activities.
