On 31 October 2007, the Company announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, MEASAT Satellite Systems Sdn Bhd (“MSS”), had decommissioned the MEASAT-1 (“M1”) satellite from operational service at the 91.5E orbital location. The announcement noted that the satellite had reached the end of its nominal operating life.
The Board of Directors of MEASAT Global wishes to announce today that MSS has successfully re-commissioned M1 in inclined orbit at the 46.0E orbital location thereby enabling it to continue in operation beyond its nominal end of life date for a period of up to 5 years. M1 has for this purpose been renamed as AFRICASAT-1.
Operating in inclined orbit, AFRICASAT-1 provides twelve (12) high powered C-Band transponders, and up to four (4) high powered Ku-Band transponders, over Africa for telecommunications and broadcasting applications. The satellite will be operated from the main MEASAT satellite control facility located just outside of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. AFRICASAT-1 enables expansion of the MEASAT satellite coverage over Africa, a fast growing and dynamic region of the world, while providing connectivity to key European teleports.
The commissioning of AFRICASAT-1 will have no effect on the issued and paid-up share capital and the major shareholders' shareholdings in the Company. Furthermore, it will not have any material effect on the gearing, net assets and earnings per share of the Group for the financial year ending 31 December 2008.
